Moderator says anti-English bigotry is 'like sectarianism'

In Scotland, we have got used to football as a context for perpetrating sectarianism so I don't think we can pass off lightly anti-English remarks which are made during matches. It is too easy to dismiss this as healthy rivalry. It is not. "Caricatures that seek to diminish others that are barbed with prejudice and misinformation are not part of a healthy society. It is nobody's business to be disrespecting one another simply because they are English or Catholic, or whatever."The Kirk leader made her comments after taking part in the Moderator's annual visit to London. She said: "The conversations I had with many of the people I met prompted reflection of whether the changed political situation will affect relations between our countries."It is time to reflect on attitudes: the things we accept, perhaps unthinkingly, that we use to strengthen our sense of identity; the caricatures that are underpinned by humour in thinly disguised prejudice.

Spring Arts comedy picks: Everybody’s here, so laugh your ass off

Nor to any of the fine local talent you can enjoy year-round.

Paul Provenza(February 29 and March 1 at Lafflines) You may have missed him in The Aristocrats, the 2005 film featuring 100 comedians telling the world's dirtiest joke, but Provenza had his fingerprints all over it as executive producer, director, and coeditor. The draw: This comedy blue blood can be as blue as his film was. Target audience: No sacred cows allowed—Provenza brilliantly attacks all your cherished beliefs.

MySpace presents Secret Standup (February 29 at the Media Club) Who's it going to be? It's got to be a big name, right? But will it be someone you like? We could tell you, but we were sworn to secrecy. You'll never get it out of us. The draw: It's always a greater thrill seeing a big name in a cozy venue.

Who'll make the cut for Shark's second round?

Not so, said Iemma's spokesman yesterday, who added that the boss had no interest in any property in the region. The agent selling the property, called Karl Karl, also denies it has been sold and is still marketing the expansive country retreat, which features a pavilion style main residence with two self-contained guest suites.

MOVING CAMP

The Australia Zoo pioneer Bob Irwin has maintained his silence in the wake of claims he has fallen out with Terri Irwin, the wife of his late son, Steve. This week it emerged Bob had bought a property at Wattle Camp near Kingaroy, where PS had previously reported the 68-year-old had been spending time since the alleged falling out.

Tributes paid to taxi blast victims

Friends have paid tribute to two women who died in an explosion which wrecked the taxi office where they worked.

The women, named locally as Sue Barker and Ann Ryan, were killed in the blast in the small building in Immingham, North East Lincolnshire.

Mrs Barker's husband Tony was seriously injured in the blast, which left the business he ran on a garage forecourt, Fred's Taxis, just a blackened shell.

Firefighters investigating the explosion and fire at the premises on Pelham Road said they believe the incident was a "terrible accident".

Some local people said they believe Mr Barker, who has run the business for many years, may have entered the small office with a petrol can which for some reason exploded.

Mr and Mrs Barker's semi-detached house, which is about a mile from the scene of the blaze, was empty.

Rolling with rifles: Bicyclists ride into the Rattlesnake to hunt

Sam Cushman rolls homeward after a trip up the Rattlesnake corridor in search of elk. "The Rattlesnake is one of my favorite places, but apparently it's everybody else's favorite place toom" he says. "This year, I've seen 50 or 60 hunters out here in the several weeks I've been hunting, which is a lot more than in past years."

CCA was founded in San Francisco in 1977, which makes it one of the oldest culinary schools in the West.

The school had immediate cachet: Both James Beard and M.F.K. Fisher, two demigods of American cuisine, spoke at the first graduation ceremony. Back then, CCA had stricter admission standards that required applicants to have some experience in the restaurant industry — so they knew what they were getting into. The school grew steadily until the late '90s, when it embarked on an ambitious expansion plan. It created three satellite campuses in California to teach basic cooking skills, and also bought property in New Orleans, planning to spend $18 million on a large campus there.

But it soon became clear that the school had bitten off more than it could chew. By 1999 the school was in default on its San Francisco tax payments, and the annual report warned investors that bankruptcy was a looming possibility.

Attic mold removal a high headache

Q: I am getting a lot of mold in my attic, which contains an air conditioning unit and hydro air that provides heat and air conditioning to the house. The mold is extensive, mainly on the roof sheathing. Two companies have offered to get rid of the mold, one for $2,000, another for $12,000. One man suggested taking up the insulation on the floor, which is not moldy. Why would that be needed, and how in the world could mold removal cost so much and with such a huge difference? What should I do?
TERRIFIED

A: The $12,000 cost is due to the need to use protective clothing and taking many precautions while working, plus the removal of the mold itself, which may be a toxic mold.

See if the $2,000 job will remove the mold, and if so, then you can do other things.
