| Fans unhappy with AFL's pre-season NAB Cup competition
FOOTY fans are disenchanted with the AFL's pre-season title, the NAB Cup, an exclusive Herald Sun online poll has found. More than 60 per cent of readers indicated they were unhappy with the AFL's pre-season competition, and 45 per cent want it scrapped. Another 18 per cent believed it should be cut to two weeks. Just 29 per cent wanted it retained in its current format. The poll results follow allegations that Sydney coach Paul Roos urged one of his players, Jarrad McVeigh, to help ensure the Swans lost their first-round NAB Cup game. Bias Seen in Bias Studies
Neal's contention that the report incorrectly frames the “debate in terms of politics rather than professional standards" is laughable. Ms. Neal's organization has been politicizing the debate over academic freedom since they released their post-9-11 report attacking faculty. They are also actively promoting legislative solutions, such as bills recently introduced in Virginia and Montana. So to suggest that this is not about politics is absurd. That is also why it seems to me that this study is very important. Anyone who sat through the academic freedom hearings in Pennsylvania or endured testimony of Horowitz, Neal, de Russy et al. in other states knows that state legislators are repeatedly told that there is an established set of research out there that proves liberal bias in higher education.

Smart road funding still finds detours
Every spring, the orange-barrel rat maze is erected. The lanes and roads close down just in time to delay and frustrate drivers in the few pleasant driving months we get here. Come November, the barrels come down and the rock salt comes out. This routine comes full circle again the following spring. Couple all that with an urban area heavy with truck traffic that moves just as fast or faster than the cars. Is it any wonder road rage and aggressive driving are out of hand here? What type of resident or out-of-state tourist would plan his or her vacation for such an area? Revamp the road funding system, but address all causes and effects of the equation, not just who gets the most money. Oscar Zamora
