Mavericks 98, Grizzlies 83

Leading up to that first game, it had been a little bit of a circus. Now that we can concentrate on the game of basketball, that's what I have to do."

Josh Howard added 20 points. Nowitzki missed only one of his nine shots in the game, while shooting 10-of-12 from the free-throw line. Kidd's 15 assists was a season high for a Dallas player. The Mavericks had a season-high 32 in the game.

"We still had 21 turnovers, but 32 assists, that's pretty good for us," Dallas coach Avery Johnson said. "We'll take that."

Rudy Gay led Memphis with 18 points, while Hakim Warrick had 15 points and nine rebounds. Kyle Lowry finished with 12 points, Mike Conley added 11 and Javaris Crittenton had 10 points.

Dallas had lost four straight road games, but a stop in Memphis can cure most road woes.

Another Look At The 'Does File Sharing Equal Stealing?' Question

The music has value, but I just got it for free, without the permission of the record label. I go see "Shakespeare in the Park." I get to see something of great value for free, without permission of William Shakespeare. Verizon sees that Sprint is going to announce an "all you can eat plan" and decides to introduce its own similar plan. Verizon got that idea for a bundle from Sprint for "free" and certainly without Sprint's permission. Yet, we call that competition, not stealing. You can come up with your own examples. Now I'm sure people will start picking apart each of these examples. They'll say things like in the pizza/soda example, the pizza shop has implicit permission to resell the soda at any price they deem reasonable, since they paid for it in the first place. But, if that's the case, then we have another problem for those who claim that copyright is real property -- because the same thing isn't true with copyrighted material.

Chronicle's Goodfellows raises record amount

The Houston Chronicle's Goodfellows program had a record year in 2007, raising more than $1.19 million from 5,066 donors.

The 2007 season collected $1,190,619.40, an increase of more than $165,000 from the 2006 season. In that year, the program which provides holiday toys to Houston-area families, collected $1,024,245.73.

The funds were anchored by several significant donations $200,000 each from Les Alexander and the Rockets' Clutch City Foundation and John Eddie and Sheridan Williams, and $60,000 from the Fred and Mabel R. Parks Foundation.

But the bulk of the donations came from smaller checks, many ranging from $5 to $25.

"Our legacy program, Goodfellows, 95 years strong, continues to serve a growing base of needy Houston families," said Chronicle Publisher Jack Sweeney.

Romanov says plumber's bid to buy Hearts 'just a pipe dream'

We do care that your club is being systematically dismantled before your eyes. It gives us great satisfaction and is everything you and and your fellow "big team supporters" deserve for the arrogant displays that we have had to put up with over the last couple of years. Get used to us. We'll be around for a long time to come. Pity your club won't be. .

The Blotter

The body of the Dripping Springs man who went missing after a kayaking accident Feb. 17 has been found about 30 miles south of the Port Aransas beach near where his kayak capsized, according to an official with the Kleberg County Police Department.

Stephen Stafford, 20, was kayak fishing with a co-worker before dawn when both men decided to return to the shore, officials said. After waves capsized their kayaks, Stafford's co-worker made it to the shore, but Stafford didn't. U.S. Coast Guard officials searched for Stafford for two days, but failed to find him.

Around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Coast Guard officials in a helicopter found Stafford's body along a desolate stretch of beach at the Padre Island National Seashore. The beach is about 30 miles south of where he was reported missing, said Kleberg County police Sgt.
