Huckabee Smells Conspiracy

A win in Washington would make it an embarrassing clean sweep over the party's newly-anointed leader. Did this factor into the decision to prematurely call the race for McCain? On Meet the Press, Huckabee called described the chain of events this way:Josh Marshall and the TPM crew have been all over this one. So far, the most compelling rationale they've unearthed to explain the quick declaration is that the State's Republican Party chair, Luke Esser, just got really excited. Let's see what Huckabee's legal team can find out.Huckabee's pressure has forced the state to resume counting the rest of the ballots. Don't expect a concession speech until the last vote is tallied, and maybe not even then. Now check out Huckabee talking to CNN today. He's got a damn good point. .

No, Kosovo is not on the St. Lawrence

I think someone from the UN is there, maybe the UN secretary-general. Things are portrayed as very hot on the Ontario/Quebec border. Canadian troops have been deployed and are facing off with Quebec troops, likely the police and maybe some Quebecois army units. They are confronting each other and one misstep may lead to war. The Quebec Premier's wife gives a long impassioned speech about why Quebec wants to leave, why they are different, why they need to be maitres chez nous. The Quiet Revolution is not so quiet anymore. There are religious lines, Catholic Francophones, Ontario Protestants. At the end of the film, a waiter shoots the Canadian PM who just a moment ago arranged for the Quebec Premier to be falsely told that war had broken out on the border to shake him up and to shake us the viewer up too.

Is government really Aspen’s biggest developer? Could be ...

Ask just about anyone, resident or visitor, working stiff or ski-bum trust-funder, and the answer often will be that builders have turned the area into one huge construction site, and that government is one of the biggest culprits.

Whether the latter observation is true is a matter for conjecture and debate.

What is demonstrably true, however, is that governments in Aspen, Pitkin County and Snowmass Village have been on a building binge that will continue, some of it in phases and some depending on public approvals, into the foreseeable future.

The full scope of this spree is not always clear. There are stories in the local media about the various projects on the drawing boards or already in the ground, but a panoramic accounting of the plans is rare.

Escape from Darfur

If he could go to college, he said, he would return to help Darfur.

The American, former TV news reporter Bruce Bowers, encouraged him to try. But Bowers never expected it would happen or that he would be the one to help make it possible.

Their conversation was the beginning of a remarkable, three-year journey out of Africa for a man he knew only as Al-banan.

The story of Darfur, and lessons learned from Rwanda, will be told in Charlotte over the next two weeks during the Echo Foundation's 2008 Voices Against Indifference Initiative. The nonprofit organization promotes human dignity, justice and moral courage. That, too, is the story of Al-banan.

The genocide in the Darfur region of western Sudan began in 2003 after a rebel uprising against the government, but Al-banan, like many people in the region, knew little about it.

Table Talk

But connected local food lovers know they can still buy eggs from Garmon Family Farms there every other Wednesday or so, in the late morning (Corinna Garmon will be there on Wednesday, Feb. 27), and perhaps find a few other farmers and a smattering of produce. (If you want the eggs, go to the market and get on the Garmon mailing list; email's your best shot at reserving a carton, which might be all committed by market day.) The Marietta Square Farmers Market has pegged May 3 as its opening day, and promises to be larger this summer.

Meanwhile, if you want to buy directly from a farmer before the spring growing season kicks in, you can head to three markets that operate year-round in metro Atlanta: the Morningside organic market, on Saturday mornings; the Decatur organic market, on Wednesday afternoons; and the produce stall just outside of Star Provisions in west Midtown, on Fridays and Saturdays.
