Fort Lewis MPs find stolen handgun, 'suspicious device'
FORT LEWIS, Wash. (AP) - Military police at Fort Lewis have arrested a man after finding a handgun and a "suspicious device" in his car after making a routine traffic stop in one of the post's training areas.The arrest was made about 1 a.m. Friday.In the car, the MPs found a pistol that had been reported stolen, and in the trunk, a "tape-wrapped object about the size of a deck of playing cards wired to a garage door opener."The MPs called out soldiers from an explosive ordnance disposal unit, who rendered the device safe by about 7 a.m.A spokesman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms said he didn't know whether the device proved to be a bomb.A U.S. Army news release says the man, who was not immediately identified, was arrested for outstanding warrants and was being held at Fort Lewis.The news release says MPs "have no indication that the suspect intended to target Fort Lewis personnel." .
Firefighters Escape After Home's Roof Collapses
TAYLORS, S.C. - A family of four escaped from their burning Taylors home early Monday morning, but the fire led to some tense moments for firefighters. Fire Chief Bobby Baker said that Taylors firefighters were inside the home on Hampshire Drive near Brushy Creek Road when portions of the roof collapsed on two different occasions, but all got out without injury. A section of the roof and walls came down on three firefighters, Baker said, forcing crews to stop fighting the fire to get those firefighters safely out of the home. A few minutes later, another section of the home's roof and walls came down where four firefighters were working. .

For the next two-and-a-half hours the primarily agricultural landscape displayed its unusual beauty to the full, moving rapidly from conifer forest, to rocky hillside and vast open plains under cloud cover so low I felt I could reach up and touch it.
Yet the overwhelming feeling was one of immense stillness, thanks to the almost unnerving flatness of the farmland and rocky scrub stretching over the horizon in all directions.
