Dreams, bullpen stressing me out

Last night I dreamed I was sent out to Turner Field in the middle of a Braves game, having seen not one minute of spring training and told to come up with something to write, ready to turn in at the end of the game.

Oy.

I used to have the old recurring stress-out dream in my beat-writing days. But now? Here I am the back-up beat writer in the middle of January. I'm dreaming this the night before I'm supposed to write one lousy fill-in blog for DOB?

Such high standards you see, for the Braves/Man in Black. Or so sayeth my subconscious.

Let me back up for a second. For those not reading carefully it's CARROLL again - hey! Wassup? Long time! - and I'm feeling a little out of it after submersing myself in hockey (hockey?) and a little Hawks and Falcons for the last three months.

Ochoa runs away with Singapore victory in season debut

Competing for the first time since winning the ADT Championship in November for her eighth 2007 victory, Ochoa finished at 20-under 268 on Tanah Merah's Garden Course. The top-ranked Mexican star earned $300,000 for her 18th career LPGA Tour victory.

"I took my game to a new level, so I'm going to keep trying to repeat myself," Ochoa said. "There are a lot of birdies out there, and hopefully I'll have great rounds this year."

Ochoa entered the final round with an eight-shot lead, and steadily built on it through three rain delays. She passed the down time by chatting with her brother.

"It was more mentally a tough day than physically. You needed to be patient and not to worry too much, and hit the ball with precision," she said.

Sorenstam won the B-flight, shooting a 71 for her third straight top-four finish.

McCain's endangered pander.

Endangered Pander? McCain supports legalization of illegal immigrants, loses 5 points over the month among Hispanic Republicans in California, according to SurveyUSA. Fred Thompson blasts the legalization bill from the right and his support among Hispanics quintuples, putting him ahead of McCain (and Giuliani) among Hispanics. ... P.S.: These are Hispanic Republicans, of course. But they are not insignificant, making up 17% of "likely Republican Primary voters" in Survey USA's model. ... P.P.S.: McCain's loss (and Thompson's gain) was actually greater among Hispanics than among GOP voters generally. ... P.P.P.S.: You don't even want to see what happened among black Republicans. ... 8:52 P.M.

A Poll Number WaPo Omitted: In that recent ABC-Wash Post poll, mentioned by Jonathan Weisman in this morning's Kyl-side--spinner, only 29 percent approved President Bush's handling of the immigration issue, a "career low." ...

Brewers: Hall overcomes finger injury to make solid debut at third ...

His finger didn't look too good. We're lucky it wasn't worse."

Well-padded: Hall's injury was nearly overshadowed by a collision between Milwaukee first baseman Prince Fielder and A's outfielder Ryan Sweeney in the second inning of Thursday's game.

Sweeney hit a ground ball to Brewers' second baseman Rickie Weeks, who made a backhanded stop and then threw high to Fielder, who leaped for the ball just as Sweeney crossed the bag. The pair collided and Fielder landed hard near first base.

After being down for a few minutes, Fielder remained in the game. He had a sacrifice fly in the Brewers' half of the second inning. Sweeney left the game with a bruised knee.

"I'm fine. He got the worst of it," Fielder said of Sweeney.

Hall was happy to see Fielder get to his feet and continue playing.

Master Gardeners volunteer green thumbs to beautify the Heyward House

The Lowcountry Master Gardener Association is comprised of about 150 volunteers who work on horticulture and ecology projects in Beaufort and Jasper counties. Members must complete at least 40 hours of training in horticulture courses -- including basic botany, fruit gardening and landscape design -- to earn their title, according to the group's Web site. And in addition to the dozen hours of volunteer service they must offer annually after certification, Master Gardeners also must complete six additional hours of continuing education each year.

A handful of certified members work on the grounds of the Heyward House one Thursday each month. On Jan. 31, seven gardener volunteers -- all Bluffton residents -- laid pine straw over parts of the landscaping to prevent weeds from popping up and to contain moisture in the ground.
