Local elections to be decided Saturday

For many Louisiana voters taking part in today's presidential primary, this might be Sublime Saturday compared to the hoopla of Super Tuesday in other states just four days ago. In some parts of St. Tammany Parish, though, there is more at stake.

All five seats on the Mandeville City Council are up for grabs, with two incumbents seeking re-election and two others hoping to remain on the job with new assignments.

Voters in Madisonville will consider 10 candidates for the five seats on the Town Council.

And in the 6th Ward north of Pearl River, the ballot includes a special election to fill a vacancy for justice of the peace.

There are 64,713 registered Republicans and 46,406 registered Democrats in St. Tammany Parish, according to Registrar of Voters M.

Thumbs up, thumbs down

Together, they held up the vehicle in the water for five minutes before Clovis police arrived. Now that's exceptional customer service.Thumbs down to the state Air Resources Board for refusing to allocate a fair share of air cleanup funds to the Valley. The board adopted staff recommendations that give the lion's share of Proposition 1B money for cleaning up pollution in the state's "trade corridors" to Southern California, despite the fact that the Valley is the most heavily traveled corridor of the four in the state. The Valley ought to be used to getting a raw deal from the state, but it's still galling when it happens -- which is nearly always.Thumbs up to the 12 volunteer fundraising guilds of Children's Hospital Central California for pledging $1 million over the next two years for an advanced child-abuse prevention program at the Madera County hospital.

Independent Truckers See End of the Road

I'm a man who's trying to make a living for my family and I'm not succeeding."

Trucking's owner-operators, the self-employed drivers who haul everything from Hummers to hay, are suffering. Many say they're running on the edge of bankruptcy, about to disappear unless they get help. While a wave of trucking failures now might be invisible to consumers, when the economy rebounds, it would push up shipping rates, helping increase prices.

The housing downturn and decreased consumer spending have cut into loads; the extra trucking capacity is pushing down freight rates. Diesel prices, which are always higher in the winter, have hit such highs that Truckinginfo.com runs ads for thief-stopping fuel-tank locks.

"If you can run all week without a flat tire, you're a little bit ahead, otherwise, you're basically just running to put the money right back into the fuel tank," said trucker Benjamin Stanley, 40, of Spotsylvania, Va.
